Language Barrier
Sunday night I flew back to Sydney. I figured that once I was in the hands of Qantas I'd be done with the (fun) challenge of communicating with a few poorly pronounced words, diligent searches for characters in the dictionary, pantomime and drawings. Monday as I got off the bus at Coogee Beach near my (fabulous!) home, this newspaper sign greeted me. At least in China I had a chance of figuring the language out!

omg, do you have *any* idea what that meant? even in australia-speak that makes no sense.
At the time I was sure it was cricket or footy or something, but in fact it's politics. Latham used to be the leader of the Labor party (left). Got me what the words in the headline specifically mean to him, but here's a quotation from him (from The Age newspaper) that gives the gist and prompted the headline: "One of the saddest things I have seen in my lifetime has been the decline in Australian male culture, the loss of our larrikin language and values....Australian mates and good blokes have been replaced by nervous wrecks, metrosexual knobs and toss-bags." Great.
(btw I just checked this to answer your comment. didn't know until now)
