A Long Reach
[Catching up...this is from April!] After the coast camping, Steven, Eric and I stopped in to visit Peter and Janice in Toowoomba, and then Eric had to return to the US. Steven I and flew to Longreach, in the outback in the centre of Queensland, to visit Rod at his sheep property. The locals on his 75,000 acres include about 18,000 sheep,
a few hundred cows (who have much better personalities than the sheep and are handy at licking dust off the truck),
and 40,000(!) kangaroos (much harder to photograph than the sheep!),
any number of reptiles (which Rod always feels obliged to catch when he can),
and one of my favorites - not generally caught unless an American puts in a request to see one - echidnas (one of only a few monotremes).
We spent a few days trying to track down the wild doggie who was getting into the lambs and generally touring around the place (not too much work on as shearing was still a few weeks off). It's somewhere I always try to visit when I come to Australia for an experience that most Australians never even have.
